Are Log Burners Eco-Friendly? A Practical Guide to Cleaner Wood Burning

There is no honest one-word answer. A log burner creates local air pollution, and wood should not automatically be described as carbon neutral. However, the appliance, fuel, chimney, firing technique and reason for using it all make a major difference.

Wood stove maintenance
We can do repairs on doors if you bring them in (replace glass/rope seals and give them a good clean). We also refurbish old stoves if it is a make we sell. This involves completely stripping them down, grit blasting each part and then rebuilding the stove. Please be aware that in the winter months we can be very busy so repairs can take longer to complete.
Wood stove maintenance
If you are burning wood on your stove, and using it evenings and weekends, usually you will need to empty it once a week. Wood burns better on a bed of ash, whereas coal and smokeless fuels need to have air coming up through the grate. Coal and smokeless fuel produces more ash than wood so you will need to empty it every day.
Electric stoves and fires
Electric stoves and fires give up to 2kw of heat. This will heat a room slowly, but would not be enough as the only source of heating in a room.
Gas stoves and fires
Gazco glass fronted gas fires are between 72% and 94% efficiency, balanced flue models tend to be slightly higher than the conventional flue models. Open fronted gas appliances can be as low as 25% efficiency. Gazco’s open fronted gas Logic range goes up to 68.5%. The higher the efficiency of the fire or stove, the more heat you get into the room for the gas used.
Electric stoves and fires
·Electric stoves and fires are a modern way to have a focal point in your room. • In hot weather you can have the flame visual without heat. • They can be installed anywhere in a property without a chimney. • You don’t need to have any distances from combustible materials. • They are very safe and can give you a small amount of heat when needed. • They are clean and low maintenance
Wood stove maintenance
All chimneys (including ones with liners) should be swept at least once a year to reduce build up of deposits and to check condition of your chimney. Depending on usage of the stove and quality of fuel, you may want to sweep once before the heating season and once part way through, your chimney sweep will be able to advise on how frequently this should be done.

This Kw calculator should only be used as a guide. It is also worth taking into account some other aspects of your home. Reasons for a larger output stove: If you have an older draughty property, you have stairs out of the room, you have limited other heating in the property, if you are going to use the stove every day. Reasons for a smaller output stove: You have a new well insulated property or you only want to use the stove occasionally when it is cold..
